This project has developed significantly since it began with one staff member in 2007 and funding from the Australian Government (via Rangelands Natural Resource Management (NRM) Program) and the Indigenous Land Corporation. At that time, the project aimed to increase the skills of MG people in recognising and managing weeds on the Community Living Areas.
Over 22 Aboriginal people received training in a wide variety of areas related to weed management in this first phase and there was also much work done to combat weeds such as neem in and around Community Living Areas.

The Department of Water is currently funding Phase 2 of the project. The new four-member team will be able to develop a broder range of land and water management skills through the department's Waterways program and through undertaking further study in conservation and Land Management at the Kimberley TAFE.

Commercial and Employment Opportunities

The team is exploring opportunities to increase their funding by working on a fee-for-service basis with local land managers. The team has already successfully completed one weed-pulling contract with Tropical Forestry Services and is working on a second.

Fire Management

Uncontrolled wildfires in the late dry season are a common sight across the East Kimberley. These fires can be very destructive as they burn large swathes across the landscape. Not only do they contribute to a loss of biodiversity they can also threaten infrastructure such as houses, sheds, gardens and fences on Community Living Areas (CLAs).

MG Corporation has been funded by the State Government through the NRM Program to implement a fire management project on MG land to:

  • Undertake coordinated early dry season burning for protection against late season wildfires, and where feasible use traditional mosaic burning to further protect important areas.
  • Work in collaboration with other land and fire managers in the East Kimberley for greatest impact

The project focuses on the Yardungarll and other CLAs, along with the Reserve 31165, and aims to establish partnerships with the key fire management agencies in the East Kimberley: the Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) and the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC).
